Will cancer be cured by human cell sized robots, smart enough to seek out and destroy diseased cells? It’s a tantalizing proposition and one that may be on our horizon. It’s not just science fiction, but Nanotechnology that is in development now.
The AELC Innovation Club had its first meeting for this year last night at its new home in the Westpac Building, St Georges Terrace Perth.
Professor Eric Bakker, Director of the Nanochemistry Research Institute at Curtin University, led the audience through a fascinating insight into the tiny world of machines on an invisibly small scale and gave us a peek at the cutting edge of medicinal research.
Some other mind bending highlights of the night were the revelations that Nanotechnology is producing invisible clothing – not just see-through but totally cloaking, producing a state of invisibility similar to the science fiction characters we are all familiar with. Also, smart textiles – Clothing that can measure body function and monitor the state of athletes, soldiers etc. How about paint that can detect and report stress and cracks on the surface of aircraft? All very real outcomes of the science of Nanotechnology
Next month the meeting will be looking at a totally different field, Innovation in Small Business. To ensure you are notified of the upcoming speakers, join our notification mailing list at the AELC Innovation Club.
