Generation Y Climbing The Ladder

Y Facts

4.5 million Australians born between 1978 and 1994 make up Generation Y. They are ambitious, hardworking, transitional, technically savvy and reward driven. Basically, these workers want more and they want it faster. Gen Y expects perks like higher salaries, constant challenges and a changing and diverse workplace environment. This has been caused by a range of societal factors including the skills shortage and their privileged upbringing.

A significant proportion of this generation comes from single-parent families which, has taught them a high degree of independence from an early age. However, while many have accused this generation of being selfish, they are also the highest achievers of any generation we’ve seen so far.

Our statistics show that around 64 % of Gen Y employees intend to stay less than two years with their employer so considerable work needs to be done if you expect to retain this generation.

Some of the incentives employers are offering include higher salaries, flexible work hours and bonus and incentive schemes. Employees are also being allowed time off for study and offered personal development courses through their employers. Excellent training, overt career paths and career coaching are also strategies being employed.
